Municipal drinking water in Sydney can come from numerous sources, but there are several areas that many people may not consider when filling their water bottles from their kitchen tap.

There are several things to consider when reviewing your drinking water source.


In Sydney, there are 11 dams, 249 reservoirs and 150 pumping stations that pumps water through 22,342 kilometres of Sydney pipes (Sydney Water, 2020b; Water NSW, 2020). “ Warragamba Dam provides 80% of Sydney’s drinking water (Sydney Water, 2020c)”. “Some water also comes from smaller dams to the south of Sydney or in the Blue Mountains. These include Cataract CordeauxAvon, and Nepean dams (Sydney Water, 2020c)”.

Drinking Water Quality

According to Sydney Water, they “collect and test samples taken from source to tap, including lakes and rivers, our filtration plants and at homes and businesses” (Sydney Water, 2020a). This certainly doesn’t mean that they test your home/business drinking water.

Although Sydney Water provides a drinking water quality test for your specific suburb, it may not show the complete story.

5G Testing

The 5th Generation of Mobile Phone Technology ratified by the 3GPP conglomerate has meant that there is a rapid race to deliver the services to the consumers and businesses that are eagerly awaiting the super-fast low latency mobile data offerings that are touted to be 10x time faster than current 4G LTE speeds. However, there are global concerns raised from the public on the safety of 5G and in particular millimetre waves (mmWaves) that will be used in the future.


The nature of 5G requires multiple frequencies as seen above and utilises multiple technology innovations such as Massive MIMO, full-duplex, beam-forming and mmWaves. This all means that they need to deploy smaller antennas more frequently. These can be called small cells, pico cells or micro cell antennas. So what can you do? A lot!

Firstly, hire a building biologist to come and assess your area and your home. They will be able to measure frequencies unto 6GHz, but in some cases, can hire specialised equipment to measure much higher than this.   It is important to obtain a baseline radio frequency (RF) exposure measurement before any new 5G antennas gets deployed.

Second, best to sign-up to any petitions and go to protest events that are organised by the many facebook groups in Australia.

What is 5G

Just as a nozzle on the spray bottle has 2 options of ‘mist’ and ‘stream’ types of spraying methods, beam-forming brings a direct ‘stream’ of radio frequencies directly to your head where you would put your mobile phone against your ear. This can be potentially hazardous.
