Municipal drinking water in Sydney can come from numerous sources, but there are several areas that many people may not consider when filling their water bottles from their kitchen tap.

There are several things to consider when reviewing your drinking water source.

In Sydney, there are 11 dams, 249 reservoirs and 150 pumping stations that pumps water through 22,342 kilometres of Sydney pipes (Sydney Water, 2020b; Water NSW, 2020). “ Warragamba Dam provides 80% of Sydney’s drinking water (Sydney Water, 2020c)”. “Some water also comes from smaller dams to the south of Sydney or in the Blue Mountains. These include Cataract CordeauxAvon, and Nepean dams (Sydney Water, 2020c)”.

Yet, your specific water supply may come from one or several sources. The best way to check this is via: https://www.sydneywater.com.au/SW/water-the-environment/how-we-manage-sydney-s-water/water-network/index.htm

Drinking Water Quality

According to Sydney Water, they “collect and test samples taken from source to tap, including lakes and rivers, our filtration plants and at homes and businesses” (Sydney Water, 2020a). This certainly doesn’t mean that they test your home/business drinking water.

Although Sydney Water provides a drinking water quality test for your specific suburb, it may not show the complete story.

Check the water quality report for your suburb here.

Water filters are critical for eliminating contaminants and pollutants in your water, as well as additive chemicals such as chlorine and fluoride that has been added by your municipal councils.

Chemicals in Drinking Water

The World Health Organization has a long list of chemicals that can be found in drinking water. You have to wonder; how many chemicals are not getting filtered by the filtration plants. How many chemicals are leaching into the 22,432km of distribution pipes around Sydney.

Our drinking water is ultimately artificial.

Quick Facts (according to research) on Fluoride:

  • Reduces IQ in children
  • Causes dental fluorosis
  • Classified as a presumed neurotoxin
  • Calcifies the pineal gland

Natural Spring Water

Natural spring water are water sources that are untouched from any other water source and seemingly bubbles out of the ground. It is a natural phenomena that  occurs and is thought to be generated through the Primary Water Cycle and is naturally filtered through the Earth’s mantle and crust collecting various minerals before it emerges onto the surface.

Natural Springs are globally plotted on a central website: www.findaspring.com

There is always a concern for contamination, but many ‘natural spring’ visitors also conduct their own water test to confirm if it is safe to drink. Drink at your own risk!

Yet, those who drink from a natural spring often say “The water is alive!”. There is an inherent energy in the water that cannot be explained. Drinking natural spring water is what brings us back to nature, and is one of the fundamentals of Building Biology: ‘Get to as close to nature as possible’. The safer method is to drink the bottled versions, such as San Pellegrino and VOSS.

With AquaTru, it’s not just filtered. It’s purified. AquaTru’s patented 4-Stage Ultra Reverse Osmosis Technology is certified to NSF standards to remove 83 contaminants, including Lead, Chlorine, Fluoride, Nitrates, PFAs and many more.

RO systems should have a re-mineraliser and/or alkalizer. Something like the Alkahydrate Filter. There are many other re-mineralisers that can be added as a supplement to the RO system and it should be researched before purchasing an RO system.

Dual-Counter-Top Filters

Point-Of-Use (POU) filtration systems are quick and easy to install into an existing faucet and allow you to have a cleaner filtered drinking water.

Depending on your requirements, you can purchase these from: https://www.psifilters.com.au/61-dual-countertop-range

GRAYL Portable Water Filters

One of my all time favourite and have purchased the original stainless steel version before they moved to the plastic versions. Still my go-to for holidays where you can’t guarantee good water quality and want to avoid purchasing single-use plastic bottled water.

Great for airport water fountains and hotel taps.

Counter-top Reverse Osmosis Filter

Avoid purchasing under-the-sink RO systems with storage bottles. Therefore this type of counter-top RO system without a storage tank allows for point-of-use filtration when it’s needed.
